Working with us

We love working with organizations that are changing our world for the better such as nonprofits, social enterprise businesses, philanthropies, and research institutions. Our best work happens when we have a collaborative partnership with our clients to really sink our teeth into solving big problems. Find out more about our services or see some examples of recent projects.

The short answer is that costs can vary quite a bit because of a wide variety of factors. We have a whole blog post about what it costs to work with us and why but the bottom line is that Visceral does large-scale custom projects that are generally in the $100-$300K range. That said, we’re always happy to chat with folks at any budget range to help provide some insight. Contact us to schedule a call.

It obviously depends on how big the project is but also on how many stakeholders are involved and how responsive they can be since our process is collaborative. Ballpark, though… we generally recommend allocating 6-9 months for a website project.
Yes, toward the end of the project, we’ll schedule a screenshare when we’ll walk your team through the new site, show you how to manage all the various pieces of content, and answer any questions you have. We also provide documentation in the form of a CMS guide that you can use as a reference.
Of course. Many of our clients have been working with us for years. Support ranges from basic site maintenance and security patches to ongoing strategy and updates to add new features and promote new initiatives. You can find information on our monthly support agreements, which we call Success Plans, or contact us to discuss what your needs might be.

About our company

We have almost twenty years of experience in branding and website design and development, most of that working exclusively to help purpose-driven organizations maximize their impact and, most importantly, with Visceral, what you see is what you get. Many larger agencies have a great sales team that promises the world and then passes you off to someone else once the deal closes. We are intentionally small so that we can focus on building great relationships and delivering great service. But don’t just take our word for it. See our Clutch profile for reviews from actual clients.

It’s always been our goal to not only do great work but also run a great company and lead with our values. B Corp provides a framework (and a rigorous certification process) to help us facilitate that. When we joined the B Corp movement in the spring of 2016, there were just over 1,500 businesses. We’re thrilled to have seen that movement grow to over 7,700 today. Read more about what being a B Corp means to us.

Craft with purpose – Our purpose is to pair our creative talents with the aspirations and resources of our partners to help solve the world’s most complex challenges.

Be one team – Trust and collaboration are at the heart of what we do. Diverse perspectives bring about the most powerful solutions.

Learn by doing – We don’t pretend to have all the answers. Daunting challenges deserve unprecedented solutions, and our creativity thrives when we are learning.

Love what you do – To be our best, we must love our craft. It’s what pushes us forward, and we are fortunate to see our love for people and planet embodied in our work.

Our founders met in Washington, DC in the early 2000s while working for one of the largest public relations agencies in the world. While the work was often challenging (something we always love), the pace was grueling, often requiring late nights and weekends, and the projects themselves frequently didn’t align with their personal values. Many friendly sessions of venting their frustrations eventually gave way to “What if we just started our own agency?” Shortly after, in May of 2006, Visceral was born.

We’re very intentional about remaining a small team, but we always love meeting new, talented people. Check our careers page for current openings or to sign up to be notified when new positions open.

How We Work

There are dozens of reasons (all of which you can read in our in-depth “Why WordPress?” post), but the bottom line is that it’s free, highly customizable so that we can deliver the best work, and easy to use in a way that empowers our clients. With over 60% market share, it’s the world’s most popular CMS and has been for years, ensuring that our clients are on a solid platform that can grow and change as their organization grows and changes.

Accessibility is a broad topic, but we do our best to ensure that our sites comply with accessibility guidelines and best practices, and there are also great third-party tools like UserWay that can add additional accessibility features. It’s not just about the design and code, though. There are many things you can do when publishing content to ensure your site is accessible.
Think of your website like your house.  WordPress has basic security built in, but that’s just a lock on the front door. We add a deadbolt, bar the windows, put up a fence, and add an alarm system! Analogies are fun, but if you (or your IT team) want technical details, you can read more about how we secure our websites, how you can measure your risk, or just contact us and let our dev team thrill you with as many nerdy details as you’d like.
Absolutely! An integrated donation platform is a great way to raise money for your cause. While there are numerous options for this, we really like the Give plugin for WordPress.
