A Journey Through Scientific Discovery

The David & Lucile Packard Foundation

In the summer of 2018, the Packard Foundation Fellowships for Science and Engineering program celebrated its 30th anniversary. For three decades they have supported scientists and engineers in their efforts to explore the unknown, which has led to some of the most exciting scientific breakthroughs in modern history. The Foundation engaged Visceral in the creation of an website that would highlight the work in a unique, immersive experience to coincide with the 30th-anniversary event in San Diego.

The Packard Foundation’s Pursuing the Unknown Science & Engineering Fellowships website used cutting-edge technology to provide an interactive 3-D experience. The site uses Javascript and WebGL (Web Graphics Library), which is a JavaScript API for rendering interactive 3-D and 2-D graphics. Visceral also used a popular open source WebGL JavaScript library called Three.js which allows us to create complex 3-D objects and animations.

The website also draws its content from the main Packard Fellows Directory, ultimately creating a site that is informative and engaging but also simple to manage for the web team. Custom Google Analytics code allows us to collect data on how users interact with the experience.
