In light of the current global pandemic, it is more important now than ever to give back and support if you are able to. As a company, we have always grounded ourselves in our value to use business as a force for good—which is why we are pleased to join the #GivingTuesdayNOW movement and contribute during these difficult times.
Check out the organizations our team members are supporting on this new global day of giving below.
How are you showing your support today? You can find a list of ideas of ways to contribute here.
For Giving Tuesday Now, I chose to donate to Mama’s Kitchen. Mama’s Kitchen is a San Diego, community-driven organization that provides nutritious meals to people around San Diego who are vulnerable to hunger due to HIV, cancer, or other critical diseases. Mama’s Kitchen is truly a place where the community has come together during this time to provide hope and care to the vulnerable. They operate under the notion that food is medicine and that food heals which is an ideal that I wholeheartedly agree with. It is so important right now for the vulnerable populations in our community to stay healthy and Mama’s Kitchen is on the front lines making sure everyone has access to fresh, colorful food without risking their health and wellbeing.
Freedom a la Cart continues to provide a valuable service in this time of need for our most vulnerable in our community. They employ survivors of human trafficking and are working hard to keep the women on their staff employed through this difficult time.
This Giving Tuesday, I’m donating to Think Dignity. Think Dignity is a San Diego based nonprofit that aims to advance basic dignity for those experiencing homelessness. During this time of extreme social upheaval and complexity, our neighbors without a place to call home are affected at an exponential rate. While a number of Think Dignity’s outreach programs have been put on hold due to the pandemic, they are now focusing on providing hygienic product kits in an effort to stop the spread of coronavirus on the streets.
Easterseals Southern California is a strong, thriving, resilient organization with a big heart that provides exceptional services, education, outreach, and advocacy so that people with disabilities can live, learn, work and play in our communities! During this COVID-19 pandemic, they’ve needed to move quickly and creatively retool the delivery of life-changing services to the thousands of people they serve every day. Easterseals mobilized a whole new service delivery system that ensures everyone in Southern California still has the services they need during this public health crisis. They continue to provide programs each and every day, just in a different way!
For Giving Tuesday NOW, I am choosing to donate to a place that’s near and dear to my heart – The New Children’s Museum. I had the pleasure of working at the Museum some years ago and continue to volunteer as a translator. It is a place full of wonder, enchantment, creativity, growth, and fun for children and adults, alike! They have been in San Diego since 1983 and focus on commissioning contemporary artists to create full-scale art installations for children to engage with and explore. They strive to make art and creativity accessible to kids and families across San Diego and continue to provide at-home and online art activities during this difficult time.
For Giving Tuesday Now, I’m donating to Feeding San Diego. It’s no secret that the COVID-19 pandemic has hit the economy hard and put many low-income people out of jobs, leaving them without a paycheck to get by. Feeding San Diego is an organization that aims to connect every hungry person with nutritious meals, and they are helping to fill the food security gap for those who need support during these trying times.
Supporting the heroic efforts of the healthcare workers on the frontlines of this pandemic is an easy choice for a donation right now, but I also have many friends in the local restaurant industry, a community of wonderful hard-working people who are also being severely impacted right now. Frontline Foods is the rare win-win organization that lets me support both of those groups at the same time. 100% of donations go directly to support local restaurants which in turn provide free, healthy meals to our local caregivers.
It’s simply heartbreaking to see what is happening to small businesses across our country and the world. I can think of no better way to use my donation than to support the over 9,000 local businesses that have filed for support as they struggle to retain employees and keep their doors open.
