3 Questions to Help Your Team Set Goals for 2020

Happy New Year and happy start to a new decade!

The start of a new year always inspires us to try new things, challenge ourselves, and grow. At Visceral, we love setting personal and team goals to keep us accountable throughout the year.

As you shake off the post-holiday blues, you might need a little help getting motivated and back on track. Take the time to check in by asking yourself & colleagues these 3 questions:

1. What is your theme for the year?

A simple theme can help rally a whole team. Are you focusing on growth or doubling down on consistency?

If it helps, you can take one large theme for the year and break it down into quarterly focuses to help keep your team motivated. For example, our quarterly themes for last year were accountability, traction, communication, and foresight. Each theme inspired new ways of thinking and actions.

2. How’s the team doing?

Really….how are they doing? Take the time to check in with your team. Have a conversation about stress levels, goals for the year, challenges they foresee, etc.

If you don’t know where to start, here’s a simple idea: At Visceral, we hand our staff a pile of sticky notes and ask them 2 questions:

    1. What do you want more of this year?
    2. What do you want less of this year?

These open-ended questions allow room for creativity, personal interpretation, and open discussion. Everyone writes their answers on sticky notes and then shares them with the rest of the team. Then, we can take the sticky notes and organize them by theme or category and help prioritize goals for the team and company as a whole. You may be surprised at how much your team has in common in what they would like to achieve. Focus on the ideas where there is the most common ground and build on them throughout the year.

3. What are your “action items”?

What are 3 things you and your team can do in the first month of the year to make you feel excited, more motivated, and on track? These items should be small but mighty tasks you have been putting off and are weighing you down. Let them go and start fresh for 2020.

Some examples of “action items” to consider:

    • Clear your inbox (yeah, you heard us right!)
    • Organize your desk and declutter
    • Tie up loose ends on small projects

We hope these three steps help you start off 2020 feeling refreshed and motivated. We can’t wait to hear your goals and themes for the year! Feel free to share them with us and let us know how we can help if you’re looking to propel your organization’s mission, brand, digital transformation!
