Shape a Sustainable Future for Your Organization

Sustainability focuses on meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. It is a fundamental concept that transcends the environmental challenges we face—it’s a leadership principle that, when applied to business decisions, can help shape an enduring future for your organization.

Check out these tips on how to sustainably lead your organization and grow your impact:

01

Lead with Values

Identify at least four values that are unique to your organization’s purpose and culture. Values help:

  • Create clarity about who you are and what you stand for as a social impact leader.
  • Build alignment within your team and help you make more informed decisions.
  • Give you confidence that you are growing the organization that you love in a way that is true to your purpose and beliefs.

02

Create a Powerful Brand

Your brand captures the essence of who you are, what you do, and why you do it. A strong brand will align with your values and provide a platform for your mission by:

  • Helping you stand out from the crowd and compelling your supporters to sit up, take notice, and act.
  • Strengthening your voice through consistency and cohesion across all touch-points internally, and with your supporters and partners.
  • Amplifying your impact by conveying credibility and galvanizing support for your mission.

03

Plan for the Future

Planning for the future seems self-evident, but it’s a lot of work, and many organizations don’t take the time to do it properly. We recommend that you:

  • Set big, audacious goals: Paint with broad strokes at first, create alignment with fellow leaders, then fill in the details with the strategies, tactics, and timeframes necessary to support these goals.
  • Make it measurable: Success is subjective and each organization is different. Know your metrics for success and how you’re going to track them.
  • Write it down: Create a plan by documenting it. Share it with your team to ensure everyone in your organization shares the overall vision and is working together toward the same goals.

04

Be Authentic

Demonstrate the authenticity of your organization’s purpose through your actions beyond the work you do or the words you use. This is your chance to walk the walk by:

  • Volunteering: Lending your time (and sometimes expertise) is a great way to build a culture of purpose and strengthen personal connections on your team.
  • Supporting ethical businesses: Money is power: Use yours by supporting Certified B Corporations that are committed to using their business as a force for good.
