Business Cards Aren’t Dead Yet

Between a half dozen or more social media channels or profiles on a number of design-related outposts, what exactly is the point of business cards in the digital age? Facebook, Twitter, Path, LinkedIn, Google+, Instagram and Pinterest all provide contact and detailed information to varying degrees. Business cards provide something those places cannot: character. Sure, you can manufacture character on any number of social media sites and even change it often to fit a particular frame of mind or up-to-the-minute mood change. Where they fail is authentically capturing personality through design the way a card can.

Home Sweet Office

Recently a friend and former co-worker asked me for advice on how to make the most of a home office. After I sent some thoughts and well wishes on their new opportunity I realized I’ve been working out my home for six years now. I’ve loved everyday of it and while I enjoy my setup, I do miss a lot of the camaraderie and collaboration that a traditional office setting provides. While those are key benefits of working in a team setting there are there are just as many benefits to working from home. There is no time-sucking commute, no unsolicited distractions when deadlines lurk, and don’t forget the tax breaks. Keep those utility bills handy come April! Read Full Post

Dissecting the Creative Brief

The birthplace of any and every successful design — no matter the media — begins at a single place: The brief. At its core the creative brief gives designers a foundation from which to think freely and to explore any number of directions to meet the primary objective. The brief is a functioning document that the design process should be measured against at every checkpoint. It should always communicate clearly by using conversational tones and provoke thought at all levels of the design process. To say it’s a design roadmap is understating its value. It’s a bible.
